Get the training and support needed for your plumbing qualification with a Certificate III in Plumbing at Building Institute NSW.


This apprenticeship course is designed for those currently employed as plumbing apprentices. It will provide the formal trade certificate you need to become a registered plumber.


Through classroom learning and work-based tasks, you’ll gain skills and knowledge to complement your on-the-job training.

Your Career

This qualification provides a trade outcome in plumbing. Occupational titles may include:

• Plumber

• Plumber and drainer

• Plumber and gasfitter

• Gasfitter

• Roof plumber

Admission Requirements

• 18 years old and above at the time of enrolment

• Pre-training review

• LLN test

Other Requirements

For Qualification by RPL, the candidate MUST provide the following required documents:

1. 100 points ID

2. Unique Student Identifier – USI number

3. Resume (Relevant Industry)

4. Reference Letter (Relevant Industry)

5. Payslip

6. Worksite Photos & Videos evidence


Units of Competency

To be awarded this qualification, competency must be achieved in:

  • 15 units of competency:

  • 10 core units

  • 5 elective units.

For the award of the CPC40920 Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services (Hydraulic services design), electives are to be selected as follows:

  • 15 units of competency:

  • 10 core units

  • 5 elective units from Group A

  • 2 units may be replaced by units from other Training Packages or nationally accredited courses at Certificate IV level and above, provided they do not duplicate the outcome of another unit chosen for the qualification.

  • Electives cannot be selected from Group B.

For the award of the CPC40920 Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services (Operations), electives are to be completed as follows:

  • 15 units of competency:

  • 10 core units

  • at least 1 elective from Group B

  • the remaining 4 elective units from Group A or Group B

  • 2 units may be replaced by units from other Training Packages or nationally accredited courses at Certificate IV level and above, provided they do not duplicate the outcome of another unit chosen for the qualification.

The elective units must ensure the integrity of the AQF alignment and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.
